Darker than Wax Labelnight Recap

#Review
Rotterdam, The Netherlands. A place with several strong established musical subcultures, rooted deep down in the city’s gritty concrete and grown under the industrial smoke of its harbour. With a rich history of music, the local contemporary beats and bass-scene is steadily growing. Local producers, DJ’s and crews are collaborating, with growing mutual inspiration and support.

Last Saturday (Aug. 2nd 2014), was a perfect example of such a get-together when Los Bangeles hosted the first dutch official Darker Than Wax label-night, at Rotown Rotterdam. With crowd from other cities and local crews this was a good boost for the beats and bass-community.

The Singapore-based label Darker Than Wax has an international roster, with an impressive number of Dutch artists. It was time to strike down on a local tip, with a heavyweight line-up.

Even though Beatsofreen currently is on the other side of the globe, he was first in line with a full showcase of his EP (released earlier this year). After that we screened a video-interview with Darker Than Wax-founder Dean Chew (a.k.a. FUNK BSTRD) to fill in the informational part.

Los Bangeles’ Mieras was next in line, warming up for newest label-member Moods and the dynamic LA-NO. Trian Kayhatu brought his band Butufunk, which consists of Azteka on talkbox and Karish on percussion. For this special occasion they teamed up with Giorgio Oehlers on the classic DX-7. The highly anticipated live-act with dancer Darleen Lopes, had so much energy that they easily took everyone through their story within the electronic Funk-spectrum. After their last song, the band suddenly disappeared into the wilderness..

The versatile Jaël flawlessly took over the decks -later on joined by LA-NO jamming live- and together with Mieras and Dagger DX they closed the night with a bang!

We need to mention that all of the artists had very interesting diverse selections and were encouraging each other to push boundaries, playing multiple genres from beats, hip hop and funk to house.

The vibe was good, really good. We are happy to see the crowd enjoying the dynamic story of the evening. Shourai fired live streaming video all across the globe, so no one could miss out. We are building a scene here, spreading that sunny vibe with a beats and bass soundtrack. Thank you all for being with us and we hope to Welcome you to Los Bangeles next time again.
